Juneteenth - July 19th
The celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest African American celebration, officially became a Federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. However, it has been celebrated in the United States in various locations since 1865. It marks the day that ALL enslaved African Americans finally learned of their freedom.
Slavery officially ended on January 1, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, but Texas, as well as other Confederate states, were slow to spread the news. Texas was actually the last state to have institutional slavery, and was the last to finally end this insidious practice.
If we do not know our history, we are bound to repeat, so it is important to ensure we understand our past. Wear our Juneteenth T-shirt to teach the world about the meaning of this holiday!
